Perfect for

  • In the hallway under the coat rack, where the latex backing keeps the rug in place when stepped on
  • Next to the bed in the bedroom, so your feet land on soft wool in the morning
  • In the children's room as a play rug — wool is naturally flame retardant and durable

The Bongusta tiger rug is handmade in Nepal under fair-trade conditions. Each fiber is 100% wool, and the backing is coated with latex, which both prevents the rug from slipping on smooth floors and extends its lifespan by protecting the wool fibers from wear. The abstract tiger pattern is hand-tufted, giving each rug subtle natural variations in appearance.

Bongusta works directly with Nepali weavers, ensuring craftsmen receive fair wages and proper working conditions. Wool is naturally dirt- and water-repellent, so the rug stays looking better longer than synthetic alternatives. The latex backing makes it suitable for both wooden floors and tiles.

Care and maintenance

Vacuum on the lowest suction setting once a week — wool does not tolerate rotating brushes. For stains: blot with a damp cloth and a little hand soap, never rub. Professional wool cleaning every 2–3 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a hand-tufted and a hand-woven wool rug?

Hand-tufted rugs like this tiger rug are made by pushing wool fibers through a backing with a tufting gun, after which a latex coating secures the fibers. Hand-woven rugs are woven on a loom, which takes longer but results in a denser and more durable product. Tufted rugs are softer and thicker but require a latex backing to hold together.

Can a wool rug with a latex backing be machine washed?

No, the latex backing cannot withstand machine washing — it will crack and crumble under high temperatures and spinning. Vacuum regularly and have the rug professionally cleaned when needed. Small stains can be blotted with a damp cloth.

Is a tiger rug suitable as a children's room rug?

Yes, wool is naturally flame retardant (unlike synthetic rugs) and withstands heavy use. The latex backing prevents the rug from folding during play. Wool is also naturally dirt- and water-repellent, repelling liquids for the first few seconds — enough time to blot with a cloth.

Does a new wool rug with latex backing have an odor?

Yes, both wool and latex can have a slight smell during the first weeks. Air the rug outdoors for a few hours or place it in a well-ventilated room. The scent usually disappears after 1–2 weeks. These are natural materials, not chemicals.

Are Bongusta’s rugs produced under fair-trade conditions?

Yes, Bongusta collaborates with certified weavers in Nepal where artisans receive fair wages, safe working conditions, and access to healthcare. Production follows fair-trade standards, and Bongusta regularly visits the workshops.

Most of my products are handmade or hand-painted. This means that there may be variations in color, finish, and minor imperfections. These variations are a natural part of the handmade look and make each product unique. Minor differences are therefore not considered defects.
