Doing Goods partners with small weaving workshops in Nepal, where artisans handcraft each bear rug on traditional looms. The wool yarn is dyed before weaving, ensuring deep, lasting colors. The floral motif on the bear’s body is woven directly into the rug — not sewn on or printed. This results in a rug where each bear has subtle individual differences in expression and color tone.

The wool comes from New Zealand sheep and has natural qualities: it insulates against cold, resists dirt, and dampens sound in the room. The rug can be placed on the floor in the living room or children's room, or hung as wall decoration. The back is flat and stable, so the rug lies smoothly without curling.

Care and maintenance

Vacuum on low power once a week. For stains: gently blot with a damp cloth and wool detergent — do not rub. Air dry flat. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the colors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a handwoven and a machine-woven wool rug?

A handwoven rug has small natural variations in weaving and color tones because it is made manually on a traditional loom. Machine-woven rugs are identical from piece to piece. Handweaving also creates a denser and more durable construction, as the artisan can adjust the tension continuously.

Can a wool rug be used in a child's room with allergies?

Yes, wool is naturally hypoallergenic and repels dust mites better than synthetic fibers. The lanolin (natural wax) in wool makes the surface dirt-resistant, so allergens do not stick. Vacuum regularly to keep the rug clean.

How do I hang a wool rug on the wall?

Use a thin wooden rod or curtain rod through the top edge of the rug, or sew discreet loops on the back and hang it on small nails. Avoid tape or glue directly on the wool. The rug typically weighs 1-2 kg depending on size, so standard wall hooks hold it securely.

Is a handwoven bear rug a good gift for a christening?

Yes, it’s a durable gift that can be used for many years — first as wall decoration above the changing table, later as a floor rug for play. Each rug is individually handmade, making it a personal and meaningful christening gift. Doing Goods also supports fair-trade craftsmanship.

Why does my new wool rug have a smell?

New wool has a natural lanolin scent (sheep wax), which disappears after 1-2 weeks of airing. Hang the rug outdoors in the shade for a few hours, or leave it in a ventilated room. The smell is harmless — it’s just the wool fibers’ natural protection.
