Description

The faience is thrown and fired in Italy, after which each bowl is hand-painted with lemons and green leaves. The brushstrokes stand out clearly in the glaze, and the motif varies slightly from bowl to bowl, so none are exactly alike. A piece of southern table culture with roots in the classic Mediterranean ceramics of the Amalfi Coast and Sicily.

Care and FAQShow less

Care and maintenance

Hand wash in lukewarm water with mild soap to preserve the hand-painted details and colours. Avoid the dishwasher and harsh scouring pads.

Frequently asked questions

Can a hand-painted faience bowl go in the dishwasher?

No, hand-painted Italian faience should always be hand washed. The dishwasher's high temperatures and strong detergent can fade the colours over time and wear down the hand-painted motif.

What is the difference between faience and stoneware?

Faience is fired at a lower temperature than stoneware and has a more porous clay body covered by a white glaze that is ideal for hand-painting. Stoneware is denser and harder, but less suited to the clear, decorative motifs that Italian faience is known for.

What is an oval bowl used for?

The oval shape holds more than a round bowl of the same width and works well for pasta, salads, antipasti and larger starters. It also works as a decorative bowl with fruit or bread on display.

Is a lemon bowl a good host gift?

Yes, a hand-painted Italian bowl with a lemon motif is a welcome host gift — especially for summer lunches, housewarmings or as a thank-you after a dinner. It is useful in the kitchen and at the same time decorative enough to leave on display.

Where does the lemon motif in Italian ceramics come from?

The lemon motif is closely tied to the Amalfi Coast and Sicily, where the large sfusato lemons have been part of the landscape and the kitchen for centuries. The motif has become a signature of southern table ceramics.

Handmade & unique product

Most of my products are handmade or hand-painted. This means that there may be variations in color, finish, and minor imperfections. These variations are a natural part of the handmade look and make each product unique. Minor differences are therefore not considered defects.
