Description

Hand-painted at Ceramiche F.L. Orgia, a Sicilian family workshop established in 1965 and now run by the third generation. The citron yellow glaze is carried by visible brushstrokes, and each male head crowned with lemons and leaves varies slightly in shade — the hallmark of handcraft. The motif draws on Palermo's legend of love and betrayal, a southern Italian symbol rendered at a new scale.

Care & FAQShow less

Care and maintenance

Wipe dust with a soft cloth — outdoors it can be cleaned with a damp cloth. Bring the vase indoors during frost to prevent cracking in the glaze.

Frequently asked questions

What is the story behind Testa Di Moro?

Testa Di Moro originates from a Sicilian legend from Palermo about love and betrayal between a local woman and a Moorish man. Today, the male head crowned with lemons and leaves is a classic southern Italian symbol that adorns balconies, gardens and entrances throughout Sicily.

What is the difference between the male and female Testa Di Moro?

The two figures belong together as a pair and are traditionally sold together. The man often wears a turban or crown of fruit — here lemons — while the woman has her hair adorned with flowers or fruit. They are typically placed in pairs on either side of a fireplace, entrance or shelf.

Can a Testa Di Moro vase stay outdoors all year?

The vase can be used outdoors on a patio, balcony or in the garden during the warmer months. During frost it should be brought inside, as moisture in the glaze can expand and cause cracks. Sicily's Mediterranean climate is considerably milder than northern European winters.

How do I clean a hand-painted Italian ceramic vase?

Wipe dust with a soft, dry cloth. For outdoor dirt, a lightly damp cloth can be used. Avoid abrasive cleaners and dishwashers, as these can wear down the hand-painted glaze over time.

Is the Testa Di Moro vase a good hostess gift or housewarming gift?

Yes — as a striking 45 cm floor vase it is a gift with weight and history behind it. It suits recipients with a love of Italy, colourful ceramics or maximalist interiors, and works equally well in a hallway, living room or on a balcony.
