Testa Di Moro means 'Moorish heads' in Italian and is a centuries-old Sicilian tradition. This 45 cm tall ceramic vase depicts a woman's head decorated with yellow lemons and floral motifs. Each vase is hand-painted by artisans in Sicily, meaning color shades and brushstrokes vary from piece to piece. Dinna personally selected this vase during a trip to Italy, where she visited the workshops.

The ceramic is fired at high temperatures and glazed using traditional techniques passed down through generations. The lemon motif is typical of Sicilian ceramics, inspired by the island’s lemon groves. The vase weighs about 3 kg and has an opening approximately 12 cm in diameter, making it suitable for both dried branches and fresh flowers.

Care and maintenance

Wipe with a damp cloth. Avoid dishwashers and harsh scrubbing, as the hand-painted surface can wear off. The vase is not frost-resistant and should be kept indoors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Testa Di Moro and regular ceramic vases?

Testa Di Moro is a specific Sicilian tradition where the vase is shaped like a human head—typically a woman or man. Each vase is hand-painted by Sicilian artisans with traditional motifs such as lemons, pomegranates, or flowers. Regular ceramic vases are industrially produced and have standardized shapes and patterns.

Is the Testa Di Moro vase frost-resistant and suitable for outdoor winter use?

No, this ceramic vase is not frost-resistant and should only be used indoors. Frost can cause water in the ceramic pores to expand and crack the vase. Keep it indoors year-round.

Why do the colors vary on hand-painted Testa Di Moro vases?

Because each vase is hand-painted by artisans in Sicily, brushstrokes, color shades, and details differ from vase to vase. This is part of the authentic craftsmanship—no two vases are identical. The base motif of lemons and the woman's head remains the same, but the expression is unique.

Is the Testa Di Moro vase a good gift for housewarming or weddings?

Yes, it makes a striking gift for housewarmings, weddings, or milestone birthdays. With its 45 cm height and Sicilian craftsmanship, it’s an investment that lasts for generations. The vase suits those who appreciate authentic craftsmanship and Italian culture.

What is the story behind the Testa Di Moro tradition from Sicily?

Testa Di Moro means 'Moorish heads' and refers to a Sicilian legend from the 12th century about a young woman and a Moorish warrior. The tradition of making ceramic heads decorated with local motifs such as lemons, pomegranates, and flowers has existed for centuries. Today, they are still made by artisan families in Sicily, often in second and third generations.
