Doing Goods produces this hook from recycled brass — a material that develops its own patina over time. The casting process means each hook has a unique surface expression. The matte finish gives a warm, golden tone that doesn’t shine. The ginko leaf is a classic natural motif in Asian design, known for its fan shape with distinctive leaf veins.
The hook measures 14 x 9 cm with a depth of 3 cm from the wall. It holds jackets, bags, and scarves without issue. Brass is a heavy metal — the hook weighs enough that it should be screwed directly into the wall or into a plugged screw, not just hung on a nail.
Care and maintenance
Wipe with a damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners — they remove the patina. Brass naturally oxidizes and darkens over time, which is part of the material’s character.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between recycled brass and new brass?
Recycled brass is melted down from existing brass items. Chemically, it is identical to new brass (copper + zinc), but production uses 95% less energy. The surface may have small variations from the casting process, giving each hook a unique look.
How do I clean a brass hook without damaging the patina?
Use a damp microfiber cloth and dry afterwards with a dry cloth. Avoid lemon juice, vinegar, or brass polish — they remove the matte finish and patina. If you want to restore the original golden color, you can polish with brass polish, but then you lose the matte character.
Can the ginko hook hold a winter coat?
Yes, if it is properly screwed in. Use a wall plug in drywall or screw directly into wood. The hook itself is solid brass and can hold 3-5 kg, but the mounting is crucial. Test by pulling on the hook before hanging heavy items.
Is a brass hook a good hostess gift?
Yes — it’s a practical gift with weight and quality. Brass feels solid in the hand, and the ginko leaf is a beautiful motif. The gift suits those who appreciate natural materials and design with patina. Wrap it in tissue paper to avoid scratches on the finish.
Does brass turn green over time?
Only if exposed to moisture and oxygen for a long time — for example outdoors. Indoors, brass develops a darker, warm patina (oxidation), but not the green patina (verdigris) you see on copper roofs. The matte finish on this hook is treated to keep its golden tone longer.
