Doing Goods collaborates with a family workshop in India where three generations weave rugs using traditional methods. Each zebra is made from sketch to finished rug over 4-6 weeks, with the wool yarn hand-dyed and woven on manual looms. The cotton backing provides stability, while the wool front ensures natural dirt resistance. Doing Goods is WFTO-certified (World Fair Trade Organization), guaranteeing fair wages and working conditions.
The Stripey zebra measures 150 x 90 cm and weighs about 2.8 kg. The black and white stripes are inspired by the Burchell's zebra from southern Africa. The wool is untreated with chemicals — the natural lanolin in the yarn makes the rug dirt-repellent. Each rug has slight variations in stripe length and shades because the dyes absorb differently depending on the yarn’s texture.
Care and maintenance
Vacuum regularly on the lowest setting with a nozzle — avoid rotating brushes that can pull the yarn fibers. For stains: gently blot with a damp cloth and mild wool detergent; never rub. Air the rug outdoors 2-3 times a year to refresh the wool’s natural lanolin.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a handwoven and a machine-woven wool rug?
Handwoven rugs have irregularities in the weave that add texture and depth — machine-woven rugs are perfectly uniform. Handweaving takes 4-6 weeks per rug, while machines produce the same size in hours. Handwoven rugs typically last longer because the yarn fibers are tighter and manually knotted.
Can a wool rug be used on underfloor heating?
Yes, wool conducts heat slowly and works well on underfloor heating up to 27°C. The rug actually insulates the room better because wool retains heat. However, avoid placing the rug directly on newly installed underfloor heating for the first 3 weeks, as sudden temperature changes can cause the wool to shrink.
Does a new wool rug shed, and how long does it last?
New wool rugs shed loose fibers during the first 4-8 weeks — this is normal and gradually stops. Vacuum lightly 2-3 times a week at first. The shedding period is shorter for handwoven rugs than machine-made ones because the yarn fibers are more tightly spun.
Is a zebra rug a good gift for a housewarming or wedding?
Yes, a handwoven animal rug makes a striking housewarming or wedding gift, especially for couples who appreciate craftsmanship and fair-trade products. The rug is large enough to stand out on its own in a living room or hallway. Doing Goods includes a card about the workshop with each rug, so the recipient knows the story behind the gift.
Why do colors vary between different Doing Goods zebra rugs?
The wool is hand-dyed in small batches, and natural dyes (such as indigo and charcoal) absorb differently depending on the yarn’s origin and texture. Two rugs from the same workshop can therefore have slightly different shades of black and white — this is a hallmark of genuine craftsmanship, not a flaw.
