This ceramic pineapple is made by Ceramiche F.L. Orgia in Italy — a workshop specializing in hand-painted fruit ceramics since the 1960s. Each pineapple is shaped, glazed, and hand-painted individually, resulting in color variations from piece to piece. The yellow glaze shows subtle natural shifts in intensity, especially around the leaves and the characteristic 'eyes' of the fruit.
Weighing about 300 grams, the pineapple has a matte finish on the bottom where the ceramic is untreated. The surface is smooth with a gentle shine from the glaze. Because it is hollow inside, it can also be used as a small vase for dried flowers or branches — the opening at the top measures approximately 3 cm in diameter.
Care and maintenance
Wipe clean with a damp cloth. Avoid dishwashers and soaking in water, as this can loosen the glaze over time. Hand-painted ceramics do not tolerate sudden temperature changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between hand-painted and industrial ceramic fruit?
Hand-painted ceramics from Ceramiche F.L. Orgia are painted with brushes by artisans, creating natural variations in color intensity and placement. Industrial ceramics are spray-painted or dipped, making each piece identical. Hand-painted pieces often have a thicker, more irregular glaze.
Can the ceramic pineapple withstand moisture in the bathroom?
Yes, glazed ceramics tolerate normal humidity. However, avoid placing it directly in water splashes from the shower, as the untreated base can absorb water over time.
Can I use the pineapple as a vase for fresh flowers?
The pineapple is hollow with a 3 cm opening at the top, so it can hold water for a few stems. Change the water every two days and dry the inside thoroughly after use to prevent moisture buildup at the bottom.
Is a ceramic pineapple a good hostess gift for a summer party?
Yes, especially if the host appreciates colorful details or collects ceramic fruit. It’s easier to transport than a bottle of wine and lasts for decades. Pair it with the lemon from the same series for a complete gift.
Why is the base of the pineapple rough and untreated?
The untreated base is standard for handmade Italian ceramics — it’s where the piece stands during kiln firing. The rough surface also provides better stability on smooth surfaces like glass or marble.
