This vase from Kersten is shaped from earthenware and fired with a white glaze, with the zebra pattern applied by hand. Kersten has produced ceramics in northern Germany since 1965 and is known for their animal motifs — especially savanna-inspired designs like zebras, giraffes, and elephants. The vase measures 19 cm wide, 10 cm deep, and stands 25 cm tall. The earthenware makes it stable enough to stand on its own, even when empty.

The opening is wide enough for a bouquet of tulips or branches, yet narrow enough to hold 3-5 individual stems without tipping over. The glaze is waterproof, so you can use it for fresh flowers. Many also use it without water — simply as a sculpture on a shelf or windowsill, where the zebra pattern adds movement without taking up too much space.

Care and maintenance

Wipe the vase with a damp cloth. Avoid the dishwasher — the high heat can gradually wear down the glaze.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between earthenware and stoneware for vases?

Earthenware is fired at a lower temperature (900-1100°C) than stoneware (1200-1300°C), making it lighter and more porous. This vase is glazed, making it waterproof, but earthenware is generally more fragile than stoneware. For a vase placed on a shelf or table, earthenware works well — it’s lighter and easier to move around.

Can the zebra vase hold fresh flowers with water?

Yes, the glaze makes it waterproof. Change the water every 3-4 days and rinse the inside to prevent bacteria. Avoid scrubbing with hard brushes, as this can scratch the glaze inside.

How many flowers fit in a 25 cm zebra vase?

The opening fits 5-9 stems depending on thickness. Tulips, roses, and ranunculus work well. If using heavy branches like forsythia or cherry branches, stick to 3-5 stems to avoid the vase becoming top-heavy.

Is a zebra vase a good gift for children’s birthdays?

Yes, if the child is interested in animals or safari themes. It works both as decoration and a practical vase for flowers from the garden. Many parents place it on a shelf in the child’s room alongside books or animal figures. The vase is not a toy — earthenware can break if dropped.

Why does Kersten make so many animal motifs in ceramics?

Kersten started in 1965 focusing on hand-decorated ceramics and quickly found their niche in animal motifs — especially from the African savanna. The founder was inspired by natural history museums and zoos. Today, zebra, giraffe, and elephant patterns are their signature, and they still produce in Germany.
