Testa Di Moro is a traditional Sicilian ceramic style dating back several centuries. This 45 cm tall vase depicts a female head decorated with hand-painted lemons and flowers in warm tones. The ceramics are produced by a family-run workshop in Sicily, where each vase is individually hand-painted. Dinna from Dims Studio personally selects these vases during trips to Sicily.
The vase can be used indoors on a shelf or console table, as well as outdoors in a greenhouse or on the balcony. The ceramic withstands weather conditions but should be brought indoors during winter in cold climates. The name "Testa Di Moro" means "Moorish heads" in Italian and refers to the historic tradition of crafting these distinctive ceramic faces. In Italy, they are traditionally sold as pairs – an older man and a young woman – but at Dims Studio, you can purchase them individually.
Care and maintenance
Wipe the ceramic with a damp cloth. Avoid harsh cleaning agents as they can damage the hand-painted surface. Bring the vase indoors during winter if placed outdoors in frost-prone areas.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Testa Di Moro vases and regular ceramic vases?
Testa Di Moro vases represent a specific Sicilian tradition where the vase is shaped as a face – typically a female or male head. They are always hand-painted and made using centuries-old methods in Sicily. Regular ceramic vases can be machine-made and come in many shapes without the cultural background.
Are Testa Di Moro vases frost and rain resistant?
The ceramic can withstand rain and sun but should be brought indoors during winter in areas with frost. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles can eventually damage the ceramic and cause cracking. In mild climates, the vase can remain outside year-round.
Can I use the Testa Di Moro vase for fresh flowers?
Yes, the vase is watertight and suitable for fresh flowers or branches. The wide opening at the top makes it ideal for large bouquets or single statement branches like eucalyptus or magnolia.
Is a Testa Di Moro vase a good housewarming gift?
Yes, a Testa Di Moro vase makes a striking housewarming gift for someone who appreciates Italian culture, craftsmanship, or Mediterranean decor. It’s a statement piece that requires space, so it suits recipients whose style matches the colorful Sicilian aesthetic.
Why are Testa Di Moro vases sold as pairs in Italy?
The tradition comes from a Sicilian legend about love and betrayal. In Italy, the vases are often sold as a pair – a young woman and an older man – representing the story’s characters. At Dims Studio, you can buy them individually, so you decide whether to have both or just one.
