Testa Di Moro (Moor’s Head) originates from a Sicilian tale of love and betrayal in medieval Palermo. These vases have decorated Sicilian balconies and windowsills for centuries. The maker behind this red woman edition started in 1965 and is now run by the third generation with the motto 'nothings too much'. The ceramics are hand-painted, so the color shades vary from vase to vase — this is part of the craftsmanship.

The vase stands 30 cm tall and weighs about 1.2 kg. The ceramic is fired at high temperature, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use (but not frost). The red woman is sold separately — traditionally she is paired with the male counterpart, but you can also use her solo as a sculptural vase or plant holder.

Care and maintenance

Wipe with a damp cloth. Avoid dishwasher — the hand-painted glaze may fade. Suitable for outdoor use during the warmer months, but bring indoors during frost (ceramics can crack below freezing).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Testa Di Moro woman and man?

The female vase traditionally features reddish tones and often floral motifs in the hair, while the male version has darker colors and a turban. Both are 30 cm tall and weigh the same. The story behind them tells of a tragic love between a Sicilian woman and a Moorish warrior.

Can the Testa Di Moro vase withstand frost?

No, the ceramic should be brought indoors when temperatures drop below 0°C. Moisture inside the ceramic can freeze and cause cracking. It’s fine to use outdoors from April to October but store indoors during winter.

How do I use the Testa Di Moro as a plant holder?

The vase has an opening at the top (the head) where you can place a potted plant directly or use it as an outer pot. Popular plants include basil, rosemary, small succulents, or trailing plants like ivy. Remember drainage if planting directly.

Is the Testa Di Moro vase a good housewarming gift?

Yes, especially if you give both the woman and man as a pair — symbolizing balance and unity in the new home. The vase is also a great gift for Italy lovers or ceramic collectors. Consider pairing it with a potted plant.

Why do the colors on my Testa Di Moro vase vary?

Each vase is hand-painted by ceramic artists in Sicily, so the glaze tones naturally vary. This is a mark of quality — no two vases are identical. Small differences in red hues, facial details, and finish are normal and desirable.
