Each knob is hand-cast by Doing Goods, resulting in small natural variations in surface and relief. Both the knob and nut are made of brass – a material that can be endlessly recycled without losing its properties. The queen bee motif is embossed into the metal with clear details in the wings and body.
The thread measures 5 cm in length, fitting most standard cabinets. If your cabinet door is thinner, you can carefully shorten the thread with a metal saw. The nut screws onto the back to secure the knob. Over time, brass develops a warm patina – a natural process that gives each knob its own character.
Care and maintenance
Wipe with a soft cloth. To preserve the shiny surface, you can use a mild brass cleaner – otherwise, the metal will naturally develop a warm patina over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between brass knobs and chrome-plated knobs?
Brass is a solid metal that can be recycled and develops a natural patina. Chrome-plated knobs typically have a zinc or steel core with a thin chrome layer that can wear off over time. Brass feels heavier and more solid in the hand.
Can I install brass knobs on IKEA cabinets?
Yes, most IKEA cabinet doors are 16-19 mm thick, so a 5 cm thread is more than enough. You might need to drill a new hole if the existing knob has a different mounting. The thread can be shortened if your door is thin.
How do I remove patina from brass knobs?
Use a soft cloth with lemon juice and salt, rubbing gently in circles. Rinse with water and dry thoroughly. Alternatively, you can use a commercial brass cleaner. Patina is not harmful – many prefer the matured look.
Is a brass knob with a bee motif a good hostess gift?
Yes, especially for someone who has just moved in or is renovating their kitchen or bathroom. Buy 4-6 pieces so they can replace knobs on a whole dresser or cabinet. Package them in a small box with a note that the thread can be adjusted.
Do brass knobs turn green over time?
Brass oxidizes to a golden-brown patina in dry indoor air. Green patina (verdigris) only occurs with prolonged exposure to moisture and acids, which rarely happens indoors. If it does, it can be removed with vinegar and a brush.
