Each panda rug is handwoven by Nepalese artisans working with Doing Goods’ fair trade partners. The wool is dyed before weaving, ensuring deep, lasting colors in the yarn. The backing is cotton, which keeps the rug stable on the floor without slipping. Because each rug is woven individually, slight variations in appearance occur — no two are exactly alike.
Doing Goods collaborates with small workshops in Nepal where artisans receive fair wages and proper working conditions. The weaving process takes several days per rug, as every detail — from the panda’s black ears to the white spots around its eyes — is woven in manually. The wool comes from certified suppliers, and the rugs are made without child labor.
Care and maintenance
Vacuum regularly using low suction. For stains: gently blot with a damp cloth and a little wool detergent — do not rub. Larger stains should be treated by professional wool cleaning services.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Doing Goods panda rug and other animal rugs?
Doing Goods rugs are handwoven in Nepal with fair trade certification, while many other animal rugs are machine-made. The wool is dyed before weaving, resulting in deeper colors than printed designs. The backing is cotton rather than synthetic anti-slip, allowing the rug to breathe better.
Can the panda rug be machine washed?
No, wool rugs must not be machine washed. Wool felts and shrinks in machine wash. Instead, vacuum regularly and have larger stains treated by professional wool cleaning. Smaller stains can be dabbed with a damp cloth.
Is the panda rug safe as a play rug for toddlers?
Yes. The rug has no loose parts, and the wool is naturally flame-retardant without chemical treatment. The cotton backing prevents slipping on smooth floors. However, wool can cause itching in some children with sensitive skin — test first by placing the child’s arm on the rug.
Is the panda rug a good gift for baby showers or christenings?
Yes, it’s a popular gift for new parents. The panda motif is calm and gender-neutral, and the rug can be used for many years — first as a play rug, later as wall decoration or in the reading nook. The fair trade aspect appeals to parents who value ethical production.
Why do panda rugs vary in appearance?
Because each rug is woven manually by an individual artisan. Small differences in thread tension, color shades, and motif placement are natural in handweaving. This means your rug is unique — not a mass-produced copy.
