This Bongusta rug is handmade from 100% wool and measures 36 x 58 cm. The Ming vase motif draws inspiration from classic Chinese porcelain of the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), where the iconic blue and white vases became symbols of refined craftsmanship. Each rug is individually hand-knotted, resulting in subtle natural variations in pattern and texture—a hallmark of genuine craftsmanship.

The wool provides natural insulation and is dirt-resistant because its fibres contain lanolin, which naturally repels dirt and moisture. The compact size makes the rug versatile: hang it as a wall rug in the hallway, use it as a floor rug in front of the bathroom sink, or place it beside the bed as a soft landing spot in the morning.

Care and maintenance

Vacuum regularly using low suction or shake the rug outdoors. For stains: gently blot with a damp cloth and a wool-specific cleaner—never rub, as this can felt the wool.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a handmade wool rug and a machine-woven rug?

Handmade wool rugs like this Bongusta rug are hand-knotted, creating unique variations in pattern and texture. Machine-woven rugs are identical from piece to piece. Hand-knotted rugs are usually denser and more durable because each knot is individually tightened.

Can I wash a wool rug in the washing machine?

No, handmade wool rugs should never be machine washed. Heat and friction cause the wool to felt and shrink. Instead, vacuum regularly and treat stains locally with a damp cloth and wool detergent.

Is a small wool rug a good housewarming gift?

Yes, a compact handmade rug like this is practical as a housewarming gift because it fits most rooms—bathroom, hallway, kitchen—and doesn’t require much floor space. It’s also easy to take along if the recipient moves again.

How do I hang a rug on the wall without damaging it?

Use a thin wooden rod or curtain clip that can be slid through the rug’s top edge. Alternatively, sew discreet loops of strong thread on the back and hang the rug on small nails. Avoid drilling holes directly into the rug.

Why are Ming vases a popular design motif?

Ming vases from 14th–17th century China are famous for their blue and white porcelain paintings, which were exported to Europe and inspired Western ceramics. The motif symbolizes classic elegance and craftsmanship tradition, making it timeless in modern interiors.
