The koala is shaped from stoneware and hand-painted in shades of grey, with white ears and a black nose. Quail Ceramics produces all their animal figures in small batches, with each koala individually painted by artisans in their workshop. This results in natural variations in brush strokes—especially in the grey fur and the white spots on the ears. The stoneware is fired at a high temperature, creating a dense surface that is water-resistant.

The opening at the top measures about 6 cm in diameter. It fits standard pencils, markers, makeup brushes, or a small bouquet of dried flowers. The base is flat and stable, ensuring it stands securely on a desk or shelf. The koala weighs around 200 grams and is dishwasher safe at low temperatures.

Care and maintenance

Safe for the dishwasher at low temperatures. Avoid sudden temperature changes if used as a vase—allow warm water to cool before filling it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Quail’s animal vases and regular ceramic vases?

Quail’s animal figures are hand-painted in small batches, so each koala has unique brush strokes. Regular ceramic vases are usually mass-produced with a uniform finish. Quail’s stoneware is also fired at a higher temperature than standard ceramics, making it more durable.

Can the koala vase hold fresh flowers with water?

Yes, the stoneware is waterproof and suitable for fresh flowers. The opening is 6 cm wide, fitting smaller bouquets or individual stems. Rinse after use to prevent limescale buildup.

How many pencils can the koala pencil holder hold?

About 8-12 standard pencils or pens, depending on thickness. The opening is 6 cm in diameter and approximately 8 cm deep, so it also works well for thicker markers or brushes.

Is the koala vase a good christening or birthday gift for children?

Yes, it makes a great gift for children aged 3-4 years and up. It’s sturdy enough for everyday use in a child’s room, and the koala design has broad appeal. Many use it as a christening gift paired with a children’s book or as a birthday gift filled with colored pencils.

Why does the color vary on Quail’s koala vases?

Because each koala is hand-painted individually. The artisan applies the grey glaze and white details with a brush, so the direction and thickness of brush strokes naturally vary. This is a hallmark of Quail’s products—not a flaw.
