This lemon jug is hand-painted by ceramic artists at Ceramiche F.L. Orgia – a family workshop in Italy producing ceramics since 1965. The jug is first shaped in the traditional Italian clay technique, then hand-painted with yellow and green tones mimicking a ripe lemon. Because each jug is painted individually, your piece will have its own unique color variations and brushstrokes. The jug measures 25 cm tall and features a functional spout and handle.
You can use the jug for cold drinks like lemonade, iced tea, or water at the table – or let it stand as a sculptural decoration on the kitchen counter or windowsill. The ceramic is fired at high temperature, but the hand-painted details are best preserved by hand washing with mild soapy water.
Care and maintenance
Wash the jug by hand using mild soapy water and a soft sponge. Avoid the dishwasher, as high heat and strong detergents can fade the hand-painted colors over time.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between hand-painted and printed ceramics?
Hand-painted ceramics like this lemon jug are painted by a ceramic artist with a brush, so each piece has individual brushstrokes and color variations. Printed ceramics are produced with standardized patterns using decal or stamp techniques, making all pieces look identical. Hand-painted ceramics are therefore always unique.
Can I use the lemon jug for hot drinks like tea or coffee?
The jug is fired at high temperature and can technically withstand hot liquids, but we primarily recommend cold drinks. Repeated temperature changes can over time affect the hand-painted colors, and the ceramic can become hot to hold.
How do I remove stains inside the ceramic jug?
Fill the jug with warm water mixed with a tablespoon of baking soda and let it soak overnight. Rinse thoroughly and wash with mild soapy water. Avoid abrasive powders or harsh sponges that can scratch the surface.
Is an Italian lemon jug a good hostess gift?
Yes, the lemon jug works well as a hostess gift for summer parties, housewarmings, or for someone who collects handmade ceramics. It’s practical enough for daily use but also decorative enough to display. Pair it nicely with fresh lemons or a bottle of limoncello.
How old is the tradition of lemon-shaped jugs in Italy?
Lemon-shaped ceramic items have been produced in Southern Italy – especially around the Amalfi Coast and Sicily – since the 18th century. The region is famous for its large lemons, and ceramic artists began shaping plates, jugs, and jars as lemons to celebrate the local fruit. Ceramiche F.L. Orgia has continued this tradition since 1965.
