Each knob is individually cast from recycled brass by local artisans in India, resulting in slight variations in surface patina and finish. Doing Goods works directly with workshops that pay fair wages and ensure proper working conditions. The threaded stem measures 5 cm and can easily be shortened with a metal saw if mounting on a thin cabinet door or using it as a wall hook. A brass nut is included.
Brass naturally develops a warm patina over time — some prefer the shiny finish and polish regularly, while others let the metal age naturally to a darker golden tone. The heart-shaped knob measures 4 x 4 cm, with a total height including the thread of 6 cm.
Care and maintenance
Wipe with a damp cloth. To maintain the shiny finish, polish with brass cleaner 2-3 times a year. Avoid abrasive cleaners that scratch the surface.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between recycled brass and new brass?
Recycled brass is melted down from old brass items (pipes, fittings, coins) and recast. It requires far less energy than extracting and refining new copper and zinc. The quality is identical — brass always consists of copper and zinc, whether recycled or newly produced.
Can I mount the heart knob on a cabinet door that is only 1.5 cm thick?
Yes, the threaded stem can be shortened with a metal saw or a vise with a cutting function. Measure the thickness of your door, add 1 cm for the nut, and saw off the rest. File the edge lightly afterward so the nut slides on easily.
How do I prevent the brass knob from becoming dull and dark?
Brass naturally oxidizes and develops patina. If you prefer a shiny finish, polish with brass cleaner (e.g., Brasso) every 3-6 months. Alternatively, you can let the patina develop — many prefer the warmer, darker tone that comes with time.
Is the heart knob a good hostess or housewarming gift?
Yes, especially if you give 2-4 pieces together in a small box. It’s a practical gift that can be used immediately, and the handmade look makes it more personal than standard knobs from hardware stores. Consider including a small note about Doing Goods’ fair-trade production.
How much weight can the heart knob hold as a wall hook?
This mainly depends on the wall material and how you mount it. On drywall with a wall plug, you can safely hang 2-3 kg (e.g., a light jacket or bag). In solid wood or directly into a stud, it can hold significantly more. The brass knob itself is sturdy — the mounting method sets the limit.

Most of my products are handmade or hand-painted. This means that there may be variations in color, finish, and minor imperfections. These variations are a natural part of the handmade look and make each product unique. Minor differences are therefore not considered defects.
