This brass knob is cast as a detailed elephant head and made from 100% recycled brass. Doing Goods’ artisans in India cast each knob individually, meaning the surface may vary slightly from piece to piece — some have a warmer golden tone, others a more matte finish. The thread is 5 cm long and can be cut with a metal cutter to fit both thin cabinet doors (1-2 cm) and thicker dresser fronts. Both knob and nut are brass, so there are no plastic parts that wear out.
Care and maintenance
Wipe with a damp cloth. Brass naturally develops a patina over time, darkening in tone — you can polish it with brass cleaner if you prefer a shiny surface.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between brass knobs and zinc alloy knobs?
Brass is heavier, more durable, and naturally develops a warm brown patina. Zinc alloy (often painted) can wear faster and chip upon impact. Doing Goods uses 100% recycled brass, so each knob weighs about 30-40 grams and feels solid.
Can I use the elephant knob on the Ikea Malm dresser?
Yes. Malm fronts are about 1.8 cm thick, so you need to shorten the thread to 2-2.5 cm (cut it off with a metal cutter). Drill an 8-10 mm hole in the front and fasten the knob from the inside with the nut.
How do I mount the knob as a wall hook?
Drill a hole in the wall, insert a wall plug, screw the threaded stem through the hole from inside, and tighten the nut on the back of the wall panel. Alternatively, you can screw it directly into a wooden batten or panel wall without a wall plug.
Is an elephant knob a good christening gift for a child’s room?
Yes, especially if you give 3-4 pieces together with other animal-shaped knobs from Doing Goods (they have giraffe, monkey, tiger). It’s a practical gift that lasts for many years, and parents can mount them on the dresser or as a row of hooks.
Why does the color of the brass knobs vary?
Because they are hand-cast from recycled brass, and the alloy composition varies slightly from batch to batch. Some knobs have more copper (warmer golden tone), others more zinc (cooler tone). This is normal for handmade brass.
