What is a throw?

A throw is a smaller blanket that you wrap around yourself on the sofa, drape over the armchair or fold at the foot of the bed. While a bedspread covers the whole bed and a rug lies on the floor, the throw is the mobile blanket that moves around the house with you, from the living room to the terrace and on to the summer house.

Precisely because the throw sits out in plain sight, it's also one of the most effective tools in interior styling. Types of throws: quilted, woven and reversible

Throws can broadly be divided by how they're made. The construction determines how the throw feels, how heavy it is, and how it drapes over the furniture.

Quilted throw

A quilted throw consists of two layers of fabric with filling in between, stitched together with quilting lines. The result is a soft, lightly padded blanket with a pleasant weight. Woven throw

A woven throw is a single layer of textile where the pattern is created in the weave itself or printed onto the fabric. It's typically lighter and more supple than a quilted throw and drapes softly over the back of a sofa. Here you'll find woven throws from AU Maison with herringbone stripes and multicoloured fringes, woven throws in recycled cotton from Bloomingville and Creative Collection, and woven wool throws from Silkeborg Uldspinderi. Reversible throw

A reversible throw has two different sides. That turns it into two throws in one: show the stripes for everyday use, and let the tiger or leopard come out when the room needs more life. Many of EJA's quilted throws are reversible, and the Franja throw from Silkeborg Uldspinderi is reversible in alpaca and merino wool. Several of Bloomingville's throws also have a printed pattern on the front and woven stripes on the back.

For many, the pattern is what decides the choice. Materials: cotton, recycled cotton, wool and alpaca

The material determines how warm the throw is, how it should be cared for, and how it ages. Here are the materials you'll meet in our range.

Cotton throw

Cotton is a natural fibre that's soft on the skin, breathes well and can be washed. That makes a cotton throw a practical everyday choice and a good option for a throw you can use all year round, including on cool summer evenings. Recycled cotton throw

The throws from Bloomingville, Bloomingville MINI and Creative Collection are made of recycled cotton blended with other fibres such as polyester, viscose and small amounts of wool. The exact blend varies from throw to throw and is stated on each product. The blend gives a soft, hard-wearing throw that, according to the care label, can be washed at 40 degrees and tumble-dried on low heat.

Wool throw

Wool is known for insulating well, even in damp air, and for regulating moisture so you never feel clammy. Wool is also naturally stain-resistant and rarely needs washing. Silkeborg Uldspinderi's wool throws are woven in combed Uruguayan wool or RWS-certified wool and weigh between 600 and 750 grams. Alpaca and wool

Alpaca wool is a soft natural fibre from the alpaca which, blended with wool, gives a throw a light, cosy hand. The Franja and Dashes throws from Silkeborg Uldspinderi are woven in 50% alpaca and 50% fine wool or merino wool. They're cared for like a wool throw: aired rather than washed.

How to care for your throw

The most important rule is to follow the care label on each individual throw. As a rule of thumb:

• Wool and alpaca: Air the throw outdoors for a few hours instead of washing it. Gently dab stains with a damp cloth, and use professional cleaning for bigger issues. Avoid machine washing and tumble drying, which can felt the wool.
• Recycled cotton: Wash at 40 degrees and dry on low heat when the care label allows it.
• Quilted throws: Wash at a low temperature following the instructions on the label, so the shape and filling are preserved.
• Fringes and tassels: Shake out the throw and straighten the fringes after washing, so they don't tangle.

Throw for the sofa, bed and terrace

Most people buy a throw for the sofa, but a throw can do so much more. Think about where it will be used most before choosing size and material.

Throw for the sofa

A sofa throw should be easy to grab and easy to fold neatly back. Formats around 130 x 160 cm and 130 x 170 cm fit most sofas and are easy to drape over the armrest. If you want to wrap yourself up completely, 130 x 190 cm or 140 x 180 cm gives you more room. Throw for the bed

A throw is handy to have nearby when a summer evening turns cool. Cotton and recycled cotton are practical outdoors because they can be washed. A wool throw, on the other hand, is the warmest and a classic in the summer house, where it can be aired on the terrace instead of going in the washing machine.

EJA

EJA is the brand that takes up the most space in our throw range. EJA designs bold textiles in cotton, and its Quilt Ethnic series is made up of quilted, often reversible throws with an outer fabric in cotton and filling of recycled polyester. The motifs range from tigers and leopards to birds, jungle scenes, flowers and stripes. EJA also makes woven leopard throws in cotton at 135 x 180 cm.

Silkeborg Uldspinderi

Silkeborg Uldspinderi is behind the wool throws in our range, created in collaboration with designers. Twist a Twill and Warp and Weft were designed by Danish textile designer Tina Ratzer, Franja was created together with Margrethe Odgaard, and The Sweater came about in collaboration with Stilleben. AU Maison

AU Maison contributes woven throws in the Zigzag Væv, Multi and Multi Stribet series. They're characterised by vertical stripes, herringbone patterns and multicoloured fringes at both ends. The Zigzag Væv throws are one-off pieces, so the pattern varies slightly from throw to throw.

Bloomingville and Bloomingville MINI

Bloomingville's throws are woven in recycled cotton with prints, stripes, patterns and tassels or fringes. Several have a different look on the front and back. Under Bloomingville MINI you'll find the Sonam throw with a mushroom motif, a natural choice for the kids' room.

Creative Collection

Creative Collection offers woven throws in recycled cotton such as Hadley with checks and Isnel with stripes or a multicoloured pattern inspired by old patchwork quilts.

• Myth: Wool always feels itchy. Fact: How itchy wool feels depends on the fibre and how it's processed. Fine wool such as merino and blends with alpaca are often experienced as softer.
